Nokia N95: Cell phone or computer?

Is the upcoming Nokia N95 a cellular phone or a computer? This is a question I frequently hear whenever my parents and I drop by the friendly neighborhood telecoms store to window shop for the next big thing. The answer is probably, “A little of both and too much of a good thing.”

For me, however, it doesn’t really matter if the Nokia N95 turns out to be more computer than mobile phone, or vice-versa. The important thing is, will it, despite the very hefty price tag (although there is no actual announcement about this, I’m assuming Nokia’s gonna sell it at a very high price), function the way I envision it.

You see, I think the Nokia N95 will be the mobile blogger’s best friend. And since I am a blogger, and so too are my parents, the computer, err, phone is a must-have for us.

From the data that Nokia has already released (apparently to create hype for what it’s labeling as “What computers have become”), the N95 is every blog junkie’s dream phone. It can connect to mobile broadband using WLAN or HSDPA with up to 10 times faster downloading rate than 3G. And to think Filipinos haven’t even begun scratching the surface of the technology’s full potential.

The Nokia N95 also has a built-in GPS (that’s Global Positioning System to the uninformed) that helps navigationally challenged individuals find their way across not only towns but entire countries.

What makes the N95 a computer isn’t its WAP or GPS features but its ability to not only take photographs of crystal clarity thanks to its five-megapixel camera but also the fact that it can upload these pictures directly to Yahoo!’s Flickr—that is assuming, of course, that you have a Yahoo! or Flickr account to begin with.

Couple these features with the others, like 3D stereo sound, television connectivity, USB and bluetooth support, and access to five frequency bands—GSM 850, 900, 1800, 1900, and WCDMA 2100—the Nokia N95 is truly a powerhouse.

Now, if we, average Filipinos, can only come up with the money to purchase one of these babies. 😛
